The Canadian League of Composers (CLC) and the Canadian Music Centre (CMC) are pleased to announce Tim Brady as the winner of the 2016 Friends of Canadian Music Award.

Every year, the Friends of Canadian Music Award honours those who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment, on a national scale, to Canadian composers and their music. The CMC and CLC jointly administer and present this award. The Friends of Canadian Music Award is in the amount of $2000. The award is divided as follows: $1000 for the recipient and $1000 for an emerging composer / composition student of the recipient’s choice. This split is to help support a promising young composer in the early stages of her/his career. Tim Brady has chosen to share the award with Montreal-based composer Gabriel Dharmoo.

A jury consisting of Hope Lee (AB), Robert Lemay (ON), and Cecilia Livingston (ON), convened to review the current nominations for the award. Juror Cecilia Livingston noted of Brady’s accomplishments:

The Committee was deeply impressed with the wide range of excellent nominees, and was delighted to select Tim Brady for the 2016 Award. His career exemplifies the Award’s criteria; his commitment to Canadian music is remarkable. The breadth of his activities as a musician, as an administrator, and as an advocate for Canadian music across the country has created countless opportunities for an tremendous range of artists and ever-widening audiences. His role as founding president of the Canadian New Music Network is a national and an international contribution that the Committee was eager to recognize, and it is only one of his many impressive achievements on behalf of Canadian music over his long career. We look forward to seeing his next ideas unfold!

The CLC and CMC will publicly present the joint award to Brady and Dharmoo alongside a concert presentation of improvised music by Brady’s trio Of Sound, Mind, and Body.
