The CLC was deeply saddened to learn of Howard Alexander’s passing on May 17, 2025.

A passionate composer, educator, musician, and advocate, Howard composed over 200 pieces for jazz bands, concert bands, ensembles, choirs, organ, and student musicians. In addition to his compositional activities, he was a founding director of the Brockville Community Choir, and an associate conductor for the Brockville Concert Band. The full obituary can be found here.

“For many young music-lovers in Ontario and Brockville in particular, Howard was their first contact with a Canadian composer,” writes CLC President Tyler Versluis. “Howard’s investment in his local music scene and music education display the remarkable career of a composer involved and engaged in their community.”

A celebration of Howard’s life will take place on Wednesday, June 18 at Wall Street United Church, Brockville, Ontario. Doors open at 12:45pm. Service at 2pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Brockville Music Festival.
