The Canadian League of Composers is saddened to learn of Dr. Barrie Cabena’s passing on April 29, 2025. An important composer, organist, teacher, mentor, and longtime member of the CLC, Dr. Cabena leaves behind an extraordinary musical legacy.
Born in Melbourne, Australia, Dr. Cabena completed studies in England before settling in Canada in 1957. In 1969, he joined the Faculty of Music at Wilfrid Laurier University where he taught for 27 years before retiring in 1996. Through his dedication to education, performance, and his output of over 1000 compositions – many of which have been broadcast nationally on CBC for decades – Dr. Cabena’s impact was profound, and will continue to resonate throughout Canada’s musical fabric for generations.
“Barrie Cabena was a towering figure in Laurier’s musical history,” said Cynthia Johnston Turner, dean of the Faculty of Music. “His artistry, generosity, and profound commitment to nurturing young musicians have left a permanent imprint on our community. We are deeply grateful for all that he contributed.”
“Over the days following Barrie’s death, I heard from many people who were profoundly touched by Barrie’s legacy as a teacher, composer, organist and church musician,” commented Tyler Versluis, President of the Canadian League of Composers. “Most importantly, however, will be his legacy as a kind human being and the influential spirit that remains with those who knew him and his music.”
