Ses compositions, nomm\u00e9ment \u00ab The Sound of Milo \u00bb, qui a gagn\u00e9 le premier prix au concours de l\u2019Orchestre symphonique de la Nouvelle Orl\u00e9ans en 1970, et sa pi\u00e8ce pour ch\u0153ur \u00ab How Beautiful is the Night \u00bb, gagnante du prix Francis Boott de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Harvard, l\u2019ont rendu connu comme l\u2019un des compositaires les plus \u00e9minent\u00b7es du Canada au XXe si\u00e8cle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comme professeur et mentor, Behrens a eu un impact consid\u00e9rable sur plusieurs g\u00e9n\u00e9rations de compositaires canadienx, ayant enseign\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Saskatchewan de 1962-1966, \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Simon Fraser de 1966-1970 et \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Western Ontario de 1976-1986 o\u00f9 il a aussi \u00e9t\u00e9 doyen de la Facult\u00e9 de 1980-1986.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Behrens laisse derri\u00e8re lui sa s\u0153ur Carole et plusieurs ni\u00e8ces, neveux, grandes ni\u00e8ces et grands neveux. Son \u00e9pouse, la pianiste canadienne Sonja Peterson Behrens, l&rsquo;a pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 dans la tombe en 2012.
