L\u2019id\u00e9e de la Ligue est n\u00e9e d\u2019une discussion informelle entre plusieurs compositeurs r\u00e9unis chez John Weinzweig en f\u00e9vrier 1951. La premi\u00e8re rencontre en vue d\u2019organiser la Ligue eut lieu le 1er avril 1951, et John Weinzweig fut alors \u00e9lu premier pr\u00e9sident de la LCC. Les activit\u00e9s de la Ligue \u00e9taient dirig\u00e9es par un conseil b\u00e9n\u00e9vole form\u00e9 de compositeurs, ce qui est encore le cas aujourd\u2019hui.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 ses d\u00e9buts, la Ligue s\u2019attachait surtout \u00e0 augmenter le nombre des ex\u00e9cutions et enregistrements d\u2019\u0153uvres canadiennes dans le but de promouvoir la musique nouvelle au Canada et d\u2019am\u00e9liorer le statut professionnel des compositeurs. La LCC jeta les bases d\u2019une petite musicoth\u00e8que de partitions contemporaines de compositeurs canadiens, mais elle ne tarda pas sentir qu\u2019il faudrait une agence ind\u00e9pendante pour g\u00e9rer et accro\u00eetre la collection. La proposition lanc\u00e9e par John Beckwith et John Weinzweig de cr\u00e9er un nouvel organisme ayant pour mission de g\u00e9rer la collection et de promouvoir la musique canadienne aboutit \u00e0 l\u2019inauguration du Centre de musique canadienne en 1959.
